About Magick Lowchen

Our Beginning

We are Katherine and Dan Benjamin and our journey with small breeds began in 2006 with Dárek (AKA Dare), a Bichon Frise, who is pictured above with Katherine. After Dárek passed away at 16 years old, we felt inspired to explore other small breeds, with a particular interest in supporting a rare breed. That’s when we discovered the Lowchen, also known as the “Little Lion Dog.” In 2021, the Lowchen was ranked 157th out of 197 breeds in the American Kennel Club (AKC), based on the number of new puppies registered—meaning it’s a breed with relatively few new additions each year. Our passion for the breed deepened after meeting  Livi La Vita Bruno Fervent AKA: Bruno and also Suma’s Moonlight Broom Ride AKA: Kiki, who would go on to win Best of Breed at Westminster in 2024. We were truly captivated and knew we had found something special.

We are new breeders, partnering with (and being mentored by) experienced Löwchen breeders to help preserve this rare breed. When our foundation girl Adamant Roman Reign Two Scoops Vanilla Bean Magick (Pattern) is of age, she will go through the health testing recommended by the Löwchen Club of America. Pattern has also earned her AKC conformation championship*. When Pattern is ready, she'll be bred with a Löwchen whose structure and temperament complements hers.

*Earning an AKC Championship is a significant milestone, as earning one demonstrates that the dog meets the highest standards of quality in both conformation and temperament. Achieving this title means Pattern has proven her excellence in the show ring by winning points and competing successfully against others in her breed. This accomplishment not only reflects the careful planning and commitment her breeders put into their breeding program, it also assures prospective owners that Magick Lowchen dogs are of quality health, structure, and type. It validates breeding decisions and helps further establish our reputation as breeders dedicated to producing top-quality, well-rounded Lowchen. Explore the AKC site for more information on conformation.

Our Philosophy

At Magick Lowchen, we are committed to responsible breeding practices that prioritize the health and well-being of our dogs, while preserving the breed’s purpose as a loyal companion. Our goal is to breed structurally and temperamentally sound Lowchen puppies who are ready to take on any adventure their humans may ask of them.

Our Lowchen

Left: Roman Reign Xtra Mischief Memory Never Fades - Arrow

Right: Adamant Roman Reign Two Scoops Vanilla Bean Magick - Pattern

Arrow's name was inspired by Robert Jordan's The Wheel of Time in memory of our bichon, Dare

"Thus is our treaty written. Thus is agreement made. Thought is the arrow of time. Memory never fades. What is asked is given. The price is paid."

Pattern's name is inspired by Brandon Sanderson's The Stormlight Archives and our favourite cryptic.
